The 251 room Puddle Dock hotel will sit on a riverside site immediately to the east of Blackfriars station, providing five star accommodation, conference, entertainment, restaurant and bar facilities within a 27,000 sq metre building designed over seven levels.
The building's organic form exterior will be clad in a highly insulated translucent envelope featuring stone veneer and glazed panels, incorporating diamond shaped windows. Expansive atria will bring light deep into the centre of the building, providing a dramatic setting for the hotel's public areas. A fifth floor rooftop terrace will provide guests with unrivalled views of the Thames, and feature a dramatic infinity edge swimming pool looking south over the river.
The Alsop Sparch design team has had to work with many constaints, including viewing corridors from St Paul's cathedral, which limit the height and mass; and the need to maintain existing major arterial roads which pass across the site, as well as nearby underground rail lines.
The Puddle Dock Hotel will incorporate a number of sustainable and low energy features, including a combined heat and power plant, rainwater recycling and photovoltaic cells. It will replace the existing Mermaid conference and events centre, and offices at No2 Puddle Dock.
The hotel's south facing rooms with a river view are sure to become the most sought-after hotel accommodation in central London, while both the club lounge and rooftop terrace will provide spectacular views.
"We are very excited to have won permission for what we believe will be a splendid addition to the Thames riverside," said Duncan Macaulay, director of Alsop Sparch architects.
