Located in Cornwall at the entrance to Mylor Creek, Mylor Yacht Harbour offers a modern and spacious marina with 400 spaces afloat on finger berths and swinging moorings. But with over 600 members, Mylor Yacht Club has now outgrown its existing building, which is to be replaced with a striking new modern building.
Director of the Exeter Office, Ian Hodder, said "Given the location of the Club alongside a Grade I listed 12th Century church and a couple of Grade II listed Admiralty buildings, our design brief was to create a building of a scale that complemented rather than threatened those buildings of historical interest in the immediate vicinity.
"The design solution for providing the Club with the space required to accommodate its members whilst acknowledging the sensitivities of scale particular to the site involved spinning the first floor of a conventional two storey structure through 90 degrees, thereby reducing the mass for the first floor whilst creating an open terrace from where Club members will be able to enjoy panoramic views over the harbour.
"Given the proximity of the Club to the church and the Admiralty buildings, we opted for a simple, elegant design and used the proportions of the building and the choice of materials to create the desired visual impact."
Archial has worked closely with both English Heritage and the church to develop its design for the new Mylor Yacht Club, which will be built between September this year and next Easter, when it will be used as an Olympic Training Camp for Great Britain and other visiting teams to the 2012 Olympic Games
Originally the most westerly Naval Dockyard and victualling station in England, then home to HMS Ganges and the Packet ships and centre for the French Resistance during the Second World War, Mylor is now home to the last fleet of Oystermen under sail. It is renowned as a haven for water-lovers of all types.
